Director – Carl Cooper

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Carl has always been passionate about the outdoors, often spending lengthy portions of his summers in Colorado or escaping to his family's ranch in Central Texas on the weekends with his dad. He is a proud graduate of Texas A&M University where he received a degree in Leadership Development. Carl has nearly a decade of experience leading diverse groups of people on outdoor expeditions. He is certified in wilderness medicine, has professionally guided white water rafting, backpacking, and rock climbing trips in Colorado, and continues to adventure as a hobby in his spare time. His favorite personal adventures include a 3 week trek across the backcountry of the Himalayas, rafting through the Grand Canyon, rafting down the Nile River in Uganda, Africa, and a multi-day backpacking trip on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. Carl's second passion is exploring the stories of those around him. To him, there is power in connecting through shared experiences. Carl and Alissa, his wife, now reside in Austin, Texas, where they are heavily involved in Young Life, a Christian non-profit organization.

One of the best trips we’ve ever had. The Sojourney staff is professional, friendly, and incredibly helpful throughout. Having now run two trips with Carl, it’s great to hand over all logistics, and focus on my leaders and kids without getting bogged down in the details. Hands down I recommend this to any and all church leaders interested in getting outside for a long weekend with their people.
